May Activities Summaries…..

I do hope you have been able to enjoy the lovely weather over the past few weeks…..it has been lovely seeing so many of our ladies and gentlemen, not forgetting their visitors, enjoying our lovely outside space at Valerie Manor…..lunching, chatting, enjoying lollies and ice creams or just relaxing and soaking up the lovely surroundings.

The weather prompted us to talk about holidays and exciting journeys remembered…..one gentleman used to live in London and loved to travel around the Country on Steam Trains.  From Euston or Kings Cross there were Luxury Day Excursions.  Full English Breakfast was served as well as Lunch then Dinner on the return journey.   Longer Steam Train journeys took him to Carlisle.  He sometimes invited himself to travel for a while in the Driver’s Cab which he thoroughly enjoyed.

A lady remembers a very special journey to visit her sister who emigrated to Western Australia.  She made this journey twice with her husband then once on her own.  She said the flight was at mid-day and she saw Europe from the window of the plane but fell asleep as they were crossing the Indian Ocean.

Another memory was travelling on the Falmouth River on a boat stopping at lovely pubs along the way.  Driving to the boat took 2 – 3 hours from where they lived at Ermington……living in Camden Town another lady remembers cycling with her husband in England and France…sometimes on two Cycles sometimes on a Tandem…you don’t see many of those these days !

Just after the War a couple went to France by train to go camping with their 15 year old daughter…..they were only allowed to take £20.00 with them and the Train Dining Car meal cost….£20.00….for the them all !

Travelling overnight on the train,  in the morning when they woke up they had gone deaf as they were travelling up the mountains.  A lovely story also about this trip was the Tent had a little hole in  it and a mouse visited them every day…..eeeekkk !

John, Sally-Ann and I were lucky to travel up to London with Zoe, Alan and five Staff to the Care Home Awards.  We were delighted to share the exciting day not to forget the wonderful result of winning the Best Individual Independent Care Home Award….see article….John and are very proud of Zoe, Alan and all of the wonderful Staff for always helping to make the Residents of Valerie Manor feel like a part of one big happy family !
