South East Regional Care Awards!

We are absolutely delighted to be finalists this year for the South East Regional Care Awards in the following categories!

The Palliative Care / End of Life Care Award – Alison, Barrett, Deputy Manager Valerie Manor:

Alison is my deputy manager and someone who is the backbone to Valerie Manor. She has been employed since we opened our nursing wing in March 2011 and has transformed our end of life care in which we really pride ourselves. Alison is our clinical lead for the Gold Standards Framework and has led the team to gain a platinum status for our continued improvement to end of life care.

Alison not only supports the residents and their families but the staff as well – here is what two registered nurses have to say about Alison:

“I will never forget the day that Alison (knowing that I had recently lost my own mother) just turned up, on her day off, at the nursing home, to support me when one of our residents had just passed away.

She didn’t have to say anything, she was just quietly, calmly there to support me and I was so grateful.

That’s the kind of nurse/ manager she is.”

RGN

From the first day Alison made me feel welcome and supported as a newly qualified nurse. I gained a good working relationship with her which had a massive impact on my learning and confidence within my new role.

Alison’s care and compassion during the end of life care process is something that I personally will never forget. It has helped to create a passion for this type of nursing within myself.

I aspire to have such excellent skills, professional expertise and above all caring personality which are the qualities of an excellent nurse., and I know that being guided by Alison in the early stages of my career has positively impacted on me and the type of nurse that I wish to be.

The Care Trainer Award: Nick and Michele Stubbs:

Nick and Michele are our trainers at Valerie Manor, they not only provide the training they act as consultants for any clinical or health and safety issues which helps to disseminate pertinent information to staff.

I often speak to other homes who ask us how we manage to get all staff to attend mandatory training – the answer is Nick and Michele! They make training informative, interesting, relevant and fun!

Although they work for their own training company they are very much considered to be part of the Valerie Manor Team and have been instrumental in us gaining our outstanding ratings, especially in safe.

Testimonial:

“I cannot nominate one without the other as they are a husband and wife team and they complement each other extremely well

I first met them both seven years ago when I started working at Valerie Manor. They have provided the mandatory training plus other courses, Michele is a trained nurse who has turned her hand to all aspects of clinical training. She is an extremely talented teacher who makes her sessions varied and interesting with many of her own stories thrown in to captivate your interest. Her sessions are never boring, and I learn something new every time.

Nick covers the less captivating subjects of Health and Safety and Fire Training however Nick has adapted these to cover the essential points while making them relevant and fun as they are not easy subjects to teach. In doing so makes the information memorable to ensure our staff and residents safety.

They both work very hard and put their all into the sessions which in turn is reflected in the high standards of the home. I feel that they are both deserving of the award as their efforts are amazing and I cannot praise them highly enough! RGN

Fingers crossed for the awards on the 3rd November!

Valerie Manor………Best National Nursing Care!

As you may have been aware we travelled up to London last week to attend the National Care Home Awards at the ExCel Centre.

Valerie Manor had been nominated and were finalist in the following categories:-

  • Best Nursing Care
  • Nutrition, Food & the Dining Experience
  • Best Overall Independent Care Home

Our group was made up of 18 people mainly colleagues but we also invited Mike from Upper Beeding pharmacy and Steve our Paramedic Practitioner from Steyning Health Centre as they are a big part of the Nursing Care our residents receive.

It is so nice to celebrate as a team for making the finals and so we arranged for everyone to meet at the O2 arena where we boarded the Emirates Air-line – a cable car ride across the Thames which provided stunning views of not only the O2 and the ExCel but also back towards Canary wharf.

I think most people enjoyed the experience!

After a champagne reception we took our seats for the awards and enjoyed a delicious meal.

It was touching to see that everyone that attended shared our passion for care and celebrated each category together.

Eventually our categories were announced:-

Best Nursing Care – and the winner is…………………..

VALERIE MANOR! – It is safe to say we gave the loudest celebration cheer of the event – which proves that every member of the team feels passionate about providing the best possible care, which is why we always try to ensure everybody is offered the chance to attend an Award ceremony as a little thank you.

Preeda also ‘livestreamed’ the announcement so that other colleagues could be part of it!

We all made our way on stage to be presented with the award by Alan Dedicoat (the Voice of the Balls from the National Lottery) who commented about our celebration cheer.

Whilst we didn’t win the Nutrition, Food & the Dining Experience we are extremely proud of our excellent team in the kitchen and front of house for their dedication and efforts.

I’m sure you will agree that good news about Care doesn’t get that much press but to be part of an event like the Care Home Awards proves that it happens all the time.

Alan & I would like to thank everyone involved at Valerie Manor for the continuous efforts and professionalism in looking after our residents and families.

Care Home Awards!

We are absolutely delighted to be announce that we have been shortlisted for three National Awards!

  • Best Nursing Care
  • Best for Nutrition, Food & the Dining Experience
  • Best Individual Care Home

We announced this recently to our residents and relatives at our Special Sunday Lunch Celebrations and last week we celebrated the achievement at our Staff meeting!

We are looking forward to attending the Awards in June at the Excel Centre in London – fingers crossed for the team!

Easter Family & Friends Lunch

This Sunday saw the very popular Family and Friends Sunday lunch return to Valerie Manor.

For those that haven’t attended we change the layout in the restaurant to allow all the residents guests to get to know each other.

Preeda, Alison & Steve once again where fantastic and the meal was delicious – several guests said that ‘the lamb just melted in the mouth’ and the fish was ‘the best they’d had!’

One of the guest was celebrating their birthday as well and so the ever resourceful team in the kitchen improvised a birthday cake and a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday was sung with a Sherry before the meal.

A huge thank you not only to the kitchen team but also to all of our fantastic staff for their efforts on the day to make it once again a very special time for everyone.

It was a very opportune time to share some very exciting news with everyone! The Kitchen team have been short listed for Best Food, Nutrician and Dining experience and the Care team for Best Nursing Care – this is such an amazing achievement in itself but we hope to take a large number of the team to the awards in London later in the year!
