Valerie Manor receives Horsham Healthy Workplace Award

In 2009 we were delighted to receive a Silver Healthy Workplace award from Horsham Council. When I was approached again by Paul Unsworth, Workplace Health Coordinator in 2012 I was extremely pleased to relaunch some initiatives that would assist our staff to become more healthy. We have had NHS health checks on site at Valerie Manor along with Health ‘MOT’s, we are working with Steyning Leisure Centre to get reduced membership for our staff and hope to have a bicycle store in our grounds to encourage staff to cycle to work.

We were delighted to receive our award, presented by councillor Sue Rogers and Paul Unsworth along with Chris Slator, our chef who had a health MOT, Alan who had a NHS healthcheck and Robert who cycles to work from Hassocks each shift! Please find the Horsham District Council press release below.

Horsham District Council – News Release – Date: 22 March 2013

ZOE BATES, the rightly proud owner/manager of Valerie Manor residential home, has received a new Horsham Healthy Workplace Award from Horsham District Council.

Valerie Manor employs 50 staff who care tirelessly for the 23 residents at the nursing and residential home in Upper Beeding around the clock.

The award recognises their high standards of safety and attention to the wellbeing of the staff.

Zoe said:

“We are nothing without our staff so their health and happiness is a vital ingredient of their consistently excellent performance and our reputation.

“We are a small team and have to be prepared for anything so looking after our staff means they can look after our residents extremely well even at the most difficult times.

“We have organised NHS health checks and wellbeing MOTs for our staff. We are planning improvements to our grounds to improve cycle storage and give staff and residents a boules pitch as well as a lovely quiet area.”

Cllr Sue Rogers, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for a Safer and Healthier District, said:

“Zoe is an inspirational businesswoman and is a testament to the benefits a small business can get from investing just a little time in exploring the returns that a Healthy Workplace Award can bring.

“I would urge other businesses to take advantage of this award scheme.”

The Horsham Healthy Workplace Award is open to any organisation in the Horsham District and brings free help and support to build a healthy workforce and with that enable a healthy performance.

The Great South East Care Awards 2012

The Great British Care Awards are a series of regional events throughout England and are a celebration of excellence across the care sector. The purpose of the awards are to pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work. You may have read recently that Alan Fry, our office manager and Michele Stubbs, our in-house trainer, were short listed for two awards this year in the Regional Finals.

The Awards ceremony took place on Friday 30th November at the Hilton Hotel, Brighton. Although on this occasion they did not win, it is a great achievement to each be one of 5 South East Regional Finalists, and they should be very proud of the trophies and recognition they received.

The Gala Award evening started in style with a champagne reception, followed by a superb gourmet dinner and the awards presentation with television star Dr Hilary Jones and then dancing into the night. Michele and Alan were both very nervous but managed to enjoy what turned out to be a very special evening. I am very proud of my team having finalists throughout 2012 which shows how hard they work and their dedication to Valerie Manor and its staff and residents – they are all winners in my eyes!

The awards support a chosen charity; The Care Professionals Benevolent Fund is the registered charity for the Care Sector and are there to support current, former and retired care professionals, by providing assistance to relieve financial hardship or sickness.

2012 National Care Awards

Last Friday saw the 14th National Care Awards take place at the London Hilton Metropole hotel. The National Care Awards has been the social care sector’s premier awards event since 1999, promoting excellence in the care industry.

Head chef Chris was one of the finalists for Care Chef of the Year (you may remember Chris spent a day up in Milton Keynes back in October cooking a delicious menu for the judges) and he was joined by myself, office manager Alan and our partners for the Gala Awards Night. It was a great evening and wonderful opportunity for the care industry to show its appreciation for the tireless work that goes on each and every day in the care world. Although Chris did not win the award it was a great achievement becoming one of just five finalists and all of us at Valerie Manor are extremely proud of him.

This Friday we’re at the Great British Care Awards for the Regional Finals in Brighton where Alan and our care trainer Michelle are finalists – we’ll report back with news from the event next week!

Care Chef of the Year Finalist

We are all absolutely delighted that Chris is one of 5 National finalists for Care Chef of the Year at the 2012 National Care Awards. What an achievement and much deserved as all the staff, residents and relatives at Valerie Manor agree! Please do have a look at the full nomination to see what we all had to say about him.

Chris spent a nervous day in Milton Keynes on Wednesday cooking a three course meal in front of the judges and was given 1.5hrs to undertake the task and it looked delicious!

We are all keeping our fingers crossed for the National Awards on the 23rd November where we will find out the results at the Gala awards night in London – Good luck Chris!

Here’s Chris’s delicious menu for judging day below…

Butternut squash and coconut soup
with chilli flatbread
Chicken, bacon and leek with smoked applewood cheese
in an open pie with a puff pastry top
Accompanied with a fresh vegetable medley
and creamed potatoes
Roast pears in cardamom and lemon butter
served with mascarpone and pecan nuts
